Serving as the county seat of York County, the city of York has done an excellent job of preserving its past. Another iconic York landmark is the Sylvia Theater, an Art Deco-style movie theater built in the early 1900s that now serves as a venue for live music and theatrical performances.
Since 1990, York has experienced steady but manageable growth. The town has made active efforts in improving the city with projects like the South Congress Streetscape Project, focused on enhancing the downtown area. There are plenty of places in and around York for outdoor recreation, like the York Recreation Center and other city parks, in addition to Kings Mountain State Park and Lake Wylie, both a short drive away. History

As the county seat, this village then experienced steady economic growth and a bustling downtown area. The town was officially incorporated as Yorkville in 1841, and shortened its name to York in 1915. During the 1890s, York evolved into a major textile hub.
Today, the historic district of York is one of the largest in the state, encompassing 264 acres of buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s.
